"Finny Fish"
The artist I have chosen is Alexander Calder and the specific sculpture I have chosen is one of his many unique mobiles named “Finny Fish”. The reasons I have chosen this design because of the following-
The visual qualities in the “Finny fish” such as colour, shape, texture, direction, tone, size are used to represent different feelings and emotions in the mobile.
The uses of the bright and dull colours are to create an effect and resemble things. Such as the deep blue colour in the recyclable glass represents the ocean. The green reminds me of the shrubbery along the edges of the sand. The brown colours remind me of the broken bottles littered in and around the ocean. I believe Alexander Calder included this to help put a stop to littering to our seas. The bright yellow is the colour of the sun watching over the beach. The red is the colour of the skin of many people after a long day at the beach.
The shape of “Finny the Fish” is a fish shape resembling the fishes in the ocean. Alexander Calder has made this shape clear by using bending materials such as wire to create the fish design. He has made the fish round and added an extra triangular shape for the fish’s tail.
Alexander Calder has used a variety of materials to give the fish an effective range of textures. Such as the glass cuttings are all in unity together however the black eyes are more dominance then the other pieces. The glass cuttings have a smooth, shiny texture like the back of a surfboard. The use of rope around the glass cuttings is balanced. The tail of “Finny the Fish” is used in repetition pattern.
The direction of the string on the tail is balance diagonally however it has a dominance line horizontally this causes your eyes to be drawn towards the centre where the string meets at a point. The outer line of the tail have sharp edges although the outer line of the body of the fish is more rounded and curved including the edges around the mouth which gives a more softer look.
The size of the fish has a dominance effect. The body is wider and larger than the tail making the body more dominance. The size of the tail is balanced on both sides resembling a kite. The sizes of the glass cuttings are all in proportion to each other representing the hundreds of people enjoying the beach. The eyes are big and bold drawing the viewer’s attention their first. The legs are in contrast creating a better effect.
The tone of the glass cuttings in harmony. Giving a more peaceful look towards the sculpture. The tone of the tail is balanced which doesn’t take too much attention from the main piece, the body.
