The Year 1948....
“Finny Fish” was made during the year 1948. This year was the year that Alexander Calder career in mobiles began. He was influenced by Mondrian and Joan Miro. Two of the many unique sculptures and mobiles he created where made in this year as well as “Finny Fish”. The names of those sculptures are “Blue Feather” and “Snow Flurry” (Standing mobile). As “Snow Flurry” was the first of many standing sculptures I believe that this particular sculpture inspired Alexander Calder to make more resulting in “Finny Fish”. During 1948 Alexander Calder exhibited in a number of major museum solo shows around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museo de arte in Sao Paulo and the Venice Biennale. Following this success, Alexander Calder moved with his family to France for a year. Alexander Calder began to actively work in the medium of gouache. He was eager to exhibit again in Europe after World War II. Alexander Calder spent several inspirational weeks in Brazil where he created many works and held two highly successful exhibitions in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.
Focus Points.....
All these events during the year 1948 had impacted Alexander Calder’s life deeply. It was the time of the end of the war in France which meant that the towns and cities were filled with joy as their loved ones have finally made it back. With the influences by Mondrian and Joan Miro, Alexander Calder created a range of standing mobiles, hanging mobiles and sculptures. The streets of France would be overcrowded which means the streets were littered. This may have influenced Alexander Calder to build “something” out of “nothing”. All his sculptures and designs would be made from recyclable materials.

Alexander Calder helped the environment by making other people aware about the rubbish in the ocean. This would encourage people to take action and help clean the environment. It would also inspire others to be able to create something out of nothing. Alexander is trying to make everyone aware through “Finny Fish” which he has done by using recyclable materials.
